Lobbying • The way to influence the lawmaking process by convincing voters to vote the way you want to. • Lobbyists use political contributions, ads, favors, letter writing campaigns, and other technique. • Those who lobby the federal government must file a report every four years listing all the legislators they have contacted.

Referendum • Occurs when a legislative act is referred to voters for final approval or rejection.
Voting • Must be 18 • US Citizen • Must live where you are registered • Is a right, not a privilege • Higher voter turnout occurs in the world’s newest democracies • 18-20 yr olds are most recent to get the right to vote • Requires registration
Recall • Allows voters to remove elected officials from office.
Initiative • A procedure that enables a specified number of voters to propose a law by petition. • Then it is either voted on by the public or by the legislature.
Special Interest Groups • Group of advocates who support a specific cause
Grassroots Lobbyists • Lobbyists who enlist the support of people from a legislators hometown.
Grass Roots v. Professional Lobbyists • Professional lobbyists have an advantage because they have more money, and they know legislators and their staff personally. • Grass Roots have an advantage because their ability to gain support appeals to a legislator’s constituents.
Federal Election Commission • Where you can go to get info about federal elections, including past statistical data.
Campaign Finance Reform • Restrictions on donations to individuals seeking election • Prohibits certain types of political ads
Treats ads that advocate for clean environment or another issue as express campaign ads. • Outlaws the solicitation of campaign contributions on federal property
