In this cooperative learning activity, students work in groups of 5 to build squares from given pieces. They must communicate without talking and ensure each person has a complete square. The activity promotes positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation, and simultaneous interaction.

Broken Squares Activity • Task • Build 5 squares of equal size from the pieces your group has been given in the different envelopes. • Each person must have a complete square in front of them • Rules • No talking, pointing or any other form of communication • You can give your pieces away, but not ask for other’s pieces • You cannot put your pieces in a central pile—only give them directly to another person
Cooperative Learning vs. Group Work • 4 Basic Principles (PIES) • Positive Interdependence • Does a gain for one student result in a gain for another? • Individual Accountability • Is individual public performance required? • Equal Participation • How equal is the participation? • Simultaneous Interaction • How many student are active at one time?
Numbered Heads Together • Students number off • Teacher asks a question: “Make sure everyone knows that…” • Heads together and hands down when done • Teacher calls a number and that one student answers
Numbered Heads Together • How does the Broken Squares Activity illustrate each of the PIES principles? • Positive Interdependence • Does a gain for one student result in a gain for another • Individual Accountability • Is individual public performance required? • Equal Participation • How equal is the participation? • Simultaneous Interaction • How many student are active at one time?
Pairs Compare • Partners take out one sheet of paper and one pencil (one group of 2, one group of 3) • Rally table within pairs (share ideas in writing one at a time)-no talking • Pairs compare lists between partners • Team challenge: Add any new learnings to list (Give number to add) Task: Write down as many cooperative learning strategies as you can over the next minute.
JigSaw • Give each team member a different piece of the puzzle, reading material, or lab activity • Students get into expert groups and work together to master their material • Students return to their original groups and teach their teammates their material • Assess all individuals in group on their understanding of all the readings or creation of a team product
Send-A-Problem • Students make up questions and write on 3x5 cards • Students check with teammates and write answer on back of the card • Team sends problem cards to another team • Teams respond
Clean Up • Put numbered pieces back into same numbered envelopes! Thanks.
