  2. The League’s Mission The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri (JLKCMO) is a 501 (c)(3) organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

  3. The Membership 1,400 members (600 Active participants) Residents of Missouri and Kansas 74% are employed full time or part time >70% married and >45% have children All have a shared desire to improve our community

Nearing a Century in Kansas City JLKCMO was organized in 1914 Started the first public kindergarten in Kansas City Helped in the creation or founding of:  Children’s TLC  Docent Program at Nelson-Atkins  CASA of Jackson County  Jazzoo/Zoo Learning Fund  Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired

Junior League of Kansas City, MissouriFundraising The JLKCMO operates on funds raised by our volunteers, which are then allocated back into the community in support of our mission at a current rate of 83 cents for every dollar raised. Holiday Mart 2013 – Great Shopping for a Great Cause Annual four-day shopping extravaganza for 22,000 shoppers October 17-20, 2013 at Bartle Hall $8 million raised to support community projects since 1988 Take Five – New Social Fundraiser started in 2012 JLKCMO Corporate Sponsors JLKCMO Member Donations

  6. JLKCMO Community Resources Three sources of assistance: Community Volunteers and Grants (CV&G) Volunteers only, Volunteers and Grants, Funds only Community Endowment Fund Funding only Action Team Volunteers only

  7. League Attributes Business year runs from June 1 through May 31 The same timeline applies for all volunteer & funding resources We rotate all our volunteer positions, including leaders, every 12 months We start with a blank slate each year for community partners

Community Volunteers and Grants (CV&G) • The CV&G resource provides League volunteers and funds to support programming at a small number of 501(c)(3) agencies in the five-county region • Application deadline: August 1, 2013 by 3 p.m. • Application is online at www.jlkc.org, Grants and Volunteers Button • Support is for June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015 • Annual disbursement of $150,000 in grants divided among 5-12 recipients • Work spread among approximately 100+ members

CV&G Successful Applications: • Are mindful of our Mission and focus on childhood nutrition and fitness The JLKCMO does support activities outside the focus area • Link funding requests to volunteer opportunities • Provide evening and weekend volunteer options >70% of our members are employed full time or part time • Give specific information about the volunteer needs; indicate where there is flexibility in the program or project

CV&G Volunteers options ideally should: Be Mission-driven Have an education/training component Have a program or project focus (no fundraising) Be descriptive of volunteer responsibilities Utilize a number of volunteers: range of 5-25+ Occur during evening and weekend hours Anticipate a year-long opportunity of approximately 40 hours per volunteer Unique programming designed especially for our partnership

CV&G Funding requests: Should be Mission-driven Provide measured outcomes; impact in community Enhance sustainability Utilize collaboration Remember that 51% of our grants go toward our JLKCMO Impact Area of Children’s Nutrition and Fitness Be mindful the average funding ranges from $500-$10,000 per project

CV&G Timeline Application deadline: August 1, 2013 Review and follow-up by CV&G Committee JLKCMO Board vote: December 2013 Notification of Board vote: January 2014 JLKCMO Membership vote: March 2014 Notification to successful applicants: April 2014 Contracts prepared and signed: May 2014 Implementation: June 2014 to May 2015

Community Endowment Fund The Community Endowment Fund offers short-term, immediate financial assistance to community agencies demonstrating critical need Maximum grant: $5,000 Annual distribution is $40,000-$50,000 Anticipate a 60-day turn-around Critical needs may include, but are not limited to: unbudgeted expenses sudden loss of funding

Community Endowment Fund, continued Grant Application ison-line at www.jlkc.org, Grants and Volunteers Button Support documentation includes: Agency mission statement IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt status letter List of Board of Directors and Officers Fiscal year-end balance sheet and income statement Program budget (revenues and expenses by line item) Other sources of projected income Assistance not available for: political causes, staff salaries, religious purposes, individuals, or fundraising initiatives

  16. Action Team (A-Team)Provides Volunteers for… “Done In A Day” type projects: 3-4 hour shifts at a time 3-15 volunteers Volunteers select what they want to support Examples:  Races  Events  Auctions  Fundraisers  Painting  Invitation Stuffing  Volunteer Appreciation Parties, etc.

  17. A-Team: When, What, How? Application on-line at www.jlkc.org, Grants and Volunteers Button Apply early, preferably 2-3 months in advance Applications accepted year-round Volunteers available August 2013 through May 2014 Evening/weekend projects ideal Volunteers sign-up A-Team Committee Chair contacts agency with availability and clarifies details
