Camp Mak-A-Dream’s mission is to provide a medically supervised, cost-free Montana experience, in an intimate community setting, for children, young adults and families affected by cancer. Organization’s Mission
A Core member of camp Mak-A-Dream’s program staff As the Resource Room Specialist I ran the Photojournaling Program and the Movie-Making Program in the brand-new Resource Room. I developed and implemented the curriculum for these workshops with the support of the Camp Director. These programs were held in 3 or 4 workshops over a 7-day camp session. At the end of each workshop series the campers would have a finished photojournal of their camp experience, or a 2-minute movie they created and edited themselves. These projects were then taken home by the campers in the hopes that they would trigger long-standing happy memories of their time at camp. Responsibilities & Role at Camp
Building art program curriculum from scratch is very challenging. Yet implementing the art program & watching the program come to life was extremely educational & rewarding. • Being hands-on in the field helping young survivors thrive with the use of these programs validated for me that I am passionate about continuing my work in the arts in healthcare sector professionally. • The biggest challenge was running programming the other core program staff did not know how to assist me with because of a lack of technical know-how. Key Learning Points of Internship
Being the Facebook Administrator for their Facebook site made me really think about how to highlight all of the camp’s activities so parents & donors felt apart of the experience too. • This organization really does make a difference to young survivors by bringing them together in a safe, inclusive environment where they can bond over their shared experiences. • The biggest surprise was how much I loved it (even after 9-12hr. days, 7 days a week)! The staff was upbeat and professional & great to work with. Key Learning Points of Internship
This Internship supports my research which focuses on how cancer camp’s improve the quality of life for young survivors. Photojournal pages by Campers
