Production Costs • Cost to make: $500,000 • Total World Revenue: $4,242,978 • Release Date: 29th October, 2010 • Director: Gareth Edwards
Background to the Film • Whilst watching fishermen haul in a net, Edwards got the idea that a monster might be caught in it • As the fishermen did not react to the imagined monster, he got the idea to set a monster movie in a world where everyone had grown used to monsters
Narrative • Six years after a NASA deep space probe crashed in Mexico, aliens have had to be quarantined in a ‘Decontamination Zone’ between Mexico & the USA. • Photo-journalist Andrew Kaulder needs to escort his boss’ daughter Sam from Mexico to the USA, through the zone. • They must avoid the monsters.
Keeping Costs Low • Camera Equipment cost $15,000 • Instead of using expensive 35mm film cameras, Edwards used an inexpensive digital camcorder with an SLR-lens on the front
Keeping Costs Low • The production had 7 crew • Dolly-shots were done resting the camera on a pile of clothes in the window of a moving van • Edwards wrote, directed, edited and did the VFX for the movie himself
Keeping Costs Low • Edwards filmed locals getting on with their normal lives – it fitted in with the idea of everyone being used to the monsters • Edwards did not seek (or pay for) permission to film in many locations
Keeping Costs Low • Instead of paying extras, he used locals who were around to play these roles, often with improvised dialogue • Edwards even filmed shots with the security force assigned to protect him in the background so they would look like the Mexican military and add authenticity to the shots
The Film’s Release • The movie opened on only 3 screens in the US • It was released in time for Hallowe’en and marketed heavily online as a monster movie • In reality, it is a blend of sci-fi & romance • A December release in the UK saw the film make $1.44m
The Film’s Success • It made nearly 9 times what it cost to make (making it nearly as successful as Titanic in relative terms) • Titanic budget = $200m • Titanic revenue = $2.2bn (just over 10x)
The Film’s Success • The film won 3 British Independent Film Awards (inc. Best Director), and was nominated for a BAFTA (Outstanding Achievement by a Debut Director) • The film won Best Independent Movie at the 2011 Scream Film Awards
The Film’s Success • Gareth Edwards has since been hired by Legendary Pictures to remake Godzilla • Legendary Pictures made Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Hangover, Wrath of the Titans, Watchmen… • They have a long- standing distribution deal with Warner Bros.
