  1. Welcome to the Media Center at Midland Middle School Your tour guide, Gem Butterfield

  2. This is our fabulous media specialist, Mrs. Maness and her magnificent media assistant Ms. Moffett. Hi there! I am Mrs. Maness Hi! I’m Ms. Moffett

  3. These are the doors to a wonderful world of adventure and learning.

  4. When you come in, put your agenda book on the circulation desk and then sign in at the podium.

  5. To the left of the door begins our non-fiction section. It goes almost all the way around, starting at the 100’s of the Dewey Decimal System.

  6. Most of the books in the sections along the outer wall of the library are arranged in order with the Dewey Decimal System. Below is a general outline of the Dewey categories. • 000 – Generalities • 001.9 – weird stuff like Bigfoot and UFOs • 004 – the Internet • 020 – libraries • 100 – Philosophy, Psychology, and • Unexplained Phenomena • 133.1 – ghosts • 133.5 – astrology • 152.1 – optical illusions • 170 - values • 200 – Religion   Amish, Bible Stories, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Quakers, and other world religions; Greek, Roman and other myths... • 500 – Science and Math • 520s – planets and stars • 551.2 – volcanoes • 567.9 – dinosaurs • 590s – animals • 600 – Technology • 600 – the way things work • 608 – inventions • 620s – planes, trains, boats, and cars • 636s – pets and farm animals • 641.5 – cookbooks • 690s – how buildings are made • 700 – Arts and Sports • 741 – how to draw • 745.5 – crafts • 791.4 – movies • 793.8 – magic tricks • 794 – games • 796s – sports • 798.2 – horseback riding • 800 – Literature (this includes fiction) • 808 – how to write • 811 – American poetry • 818.54 – jokes and riddles • 900 – Geography and History • 910.4 – shipwrecks, pirates, and explorers • 932 – Ancient Egypt and mummies • 940 – Medieval times – castles and knights • 973 – U.S. history • 978 – Cowboys and the wild west

  7. All of these shelves are out fiction titles. They are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. Occasionally, books are arranged by series.

  8. This is a computer work station. Please make sure you have your internet use card. Let us know if we can help you!

  9. This is our OPAC computer. We use Destiny to search for titles. I will show you how.

  10. This is the first page in the online catalog, Destiny. This is how we look for particular books. You can search by keyword, title, author, subject or series.

  11. Here I have put in a search for Kinney, Jeff. I will select the author tab to see a list of the books we have by him.

  12. Jeff Kinney is the author of the “Wimpy kid” books.

  13. This is our reference section. We have a great selection of encyclopedias and other reference books.

  14. Here are some more reference books.

  15. And some more reference books as well as some tables to spread out and work upon.

  16. Over here are some paperback books. These books are available for checkout if you don’t have your card or you need to return a book or pay a fine.

  19. Through here is Ms. Maness’ office and a work area.

  20. This is Mrs. Maness’ office If you don’t see her out on the floor, she may be in here working. The door is always open!

  21. Here is the laminating machine. It may take a day or two to get something laminated, but let us know if you need it sooner. We will do our best to get it for you.

  22. In this room, there are class sets of novels by grade level as well as videos and DVDs by subject level. Most are listed in the OPAC, but if you need something, we can locate it at another school.

  23. Here is the DVD and video collection. They are arranged by subject area and are on the OPAC. We can help you find most anything you need. We will need you to fill out a video use form that correlates with your lesson plan. Then we can think of any other resources we might have.

  24. We also have itouches, SMART Response clickers, digital cameras, and video cameras. • This has just been an overview off what we have to offer. Let us know what you need or what you are working on and we will see how we can help.
