Amphibians Salamanders, Frogs, Toads, Caecilians Only modern descendants of an ancient group that gave rise to all other land vertebrates. With some exceptions, lives in water as a larva and on land as an adult; Breathes with lungs as an adult; Moist skin that contains mucus glands; Lacks scales and claws.
Environment • Must live near water • Common in moist, warm areas like the tropics • Desert amphibians have adaptations that enable them to take advantage of water when it is available. • Past several decades many species becoming extinct • Serve as an indicator species for the health of the ecosystem • Food Source • Two stages of development two types of feeding: • At beginning of life they are filter feeders or herbivores • At adult life they are usually carnivores- eat practically anything they can catch and swallow
Maintaining Homeostasis - Internal (Circulation, Respiration, Excretion) • Gas exchange through the skin as well as through the gills. • Lungs replace gills once the amphibians becomes an adult • Double loop circulation system- 1st loop to the heart the 2nd away from heart • Kidneys filter wastes from the blood then out the body as urine Maintaining Homeostasis - External (Response) • Well- developed nervous and sensory system • Large eyes that can move around in their sockets • Eardrums located on each side of the head
Movement • Larvae move much like fish- wiggle their bodies • Adults use front and back legs to move in a variety of ways Reproduction • Lay eggs that do not have shells; will dry out if they are not kept moist • Females lay eggs in water and males fertilize them externally • Most amphibians abandon their eggs after they lay them.
Evolutionary Milestone • Ectotherms (cold-blooded – control body temperature through external means) • Lays eggs in water • Adult breathes air • Must maintain moist skin
