Grasslands Biome • Found on every continent except Antarctica • 2 Types • Savanna • Temperate Grasslands
Savanna • Rolling grassland scattered with shrubs and isolated trees • Not enough rain falls to support forests • Also known as tropical grasslands • Found on either side of the equator on the edges of tropical rainforests
Savanna • Warm temperature year round • Two different seasons in a savanna • long dry season (winter) • very wet season (summer)
Savanna • Dry season • winter - average of about 4 inches of rain falls • December and February no rain will fall • cooler during this dry season - approximately 70° F
Savanna • Wet season • summer - lots of rain. • an average of 15 to 25 inches of rain during monsoon • hot and very humid during the rainy season • hours of rain in the afternoon
Plants • Various Grasses • Acacia Trees – Africa • Eucalyptus – Australia • Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela – great diversity in plant life
Plants • Plants are highly specialized for drought • long tap roots • trunks store water • thick bark • Grow from the bottom up • Storage organs like bulbs and corms for water
Human Influence • Africa people have started using grasslands for their cattle and goats • Soon the grasses are completely eaten up • Savanna turns into a desert • Huge areas are lost to the Sahara desert annually due to overgrazing and farming
Animals • Large herds of grazing & browsing hoofed animals • Each animal is specialized - reduces competition • Different species eat different parts of the grass • Some grasses are too sharp or bitter for some animals, but not others
Herbivores • Tanzania have some of the most well known. gazelle, zebras, elephants, giraffes & rhinoceros • Ungulates - animals with hooves • Large herbivores can survive because they can roam & eat plentiful grasses • Australia - kangaroos
Birds • Cranes, Flamingos, Vultures, Peacocks, Ostrich
Carnivores • lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals and hyenas
Temperate Grasslands • Large terrain of grasses, flowers and herbs • Latitude, soil & climate determine types of plants • Temperatures from -40 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit • Average annual precipitation (10 – 30 inches) • Drought and fire prevent large forests from growing • Grasses survive fires - grow from the bottom up
Temperate Grasslands • two different types of grasslands • tall-grass - humid and wet areas • short-grass – dry areas with hot summers and colder winters than the tall-grass areas • U.S. has both – prairies • tall grass up to 11 feet in the Midwest • short grass near the Rockies and in hotter areas
Temperate Grasslands • Russian and Asian steppes • from the Ukraine of Russia to Siberia • very cold and dry climate • inds from the arctic aren't blocked by any mountains • Argentina, South American pampas • humid and moist • more precipitation • tall-grass variety
Plants • Common North American Plants • Buffalo Grass • Sunflower • Crazy Weed • Asters • Blazing Stars • Coneflowers • Goldenrods • Clover • Wild Indigos
Insects • Common North American Grassland Insects • Grasshopper • Bumble Bee • Monarch Butterfly • Dragonfly • Ants
