Order of Operations1. Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols. ( ) { } [ ]2. Evaluate all powers.3. Do all multiplications and/or divisions from LEFT to RIGHT.4. Do all additions and/or subtractions from LEFT to RIGHT.
Grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], and braces { } are used to clarify or change the order of operations.
Examples: Simplify 1. 4 + 32 2. 4 + (5 + 1)2
3. 4 + [–1(–2 – 2)]2 4. 4( –2/3 + 4/3 )
5. 4 – 3[4 –2(6 – 3)] ÷ 2 6. 16 – 3(8 – 3)2 ÷ 5
A fraction bar is another type of grouping symbol. Perform all calculations above and below the fraction bar before dividing the numerator by the denominator.
2. 3.
Algebraic expressions can be evaluated when the values of the variables are known 1. Replace the variables with their values. 2. Find the value of the expression using the order of operations.
Examples: Simplify 1. 2x + 4y if x = 3 and y = 10
2. – {2x – [3 – (4 – 3x)] + 6x} if x = 2 3. 14a + 5b[6 – (2c + 3)] if a = 1, b = 4, c = 3
