Broadband Mapping Program - Update Robert F. Austin NGAC Point of Contact October 5, 2011
Program • National Broadband Map • http://broadbandmap.gov/ • The purpose of this program is • To develop an easily read map that shows a comprehensive picture of existing broadband service and • To identify areas in the nation that still do not have broadband service
Program Contacts • Anne Neville • Director, State Broadband Data & Development Grant Program & National Broadband Mapping Program • National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) • Michael Byrne • Geographic Information Officer • Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
Current Activities • Broadband Map is listed on data.gov • Collection methodologies and data development information (i.e., metadata) are included. • Access to the Broadband Map is accomplished by streaming rather than downloads • Each state • Updates the data twice a year • Sends the data to the Federal government and also • Puts the data on-line themselves • Most recent update of the Broadband Map was completed in early September 2011
Current Activities • Much emphasis was placed on search during development • Suite of RESTful APIs was developed at the FCC to support search and other actions • APIs were published and are being reused by commercial firms and other agencies • Use of open source development tools and guidelines and the automation of the input process helped to control the cost of on-going operations
Emerging Issues • Although funding has been committed to project updates, continued funding of the Broadband Map is subject to the will of congress
Next Steps Based the FGDC Summary Response… • Monitor and track progress • Invite Program Contacts to attend next NGAC meeting in Washington • To report on project status • To provide a demonstration of functionality • To discuss current and future develo0pment activities
