Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) Koc University – Istanbul/TURKEY Wireless Networks Laboratory (WNL) Researchers: NabeelAkhtar Irem Nizamoglu SeyhanUcar http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
What is VANET? • Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs): • Self organizing networks, • Highly mobile. • Aim is; • Increasing the safety of roads, • Increasing the comfort of the passengers. • According to communication between vehicles 2 types; • With Road Side Unit (RSU) • Between vehicles Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
Fuel Consumption of Transport Vehicles • 70% of all oil consumed in US is used for transportation • More than 65% of this amount is used for personal vehicles • Passenger vehicles contribute about 20% of all US CO2 gas emissions * U.S. Environmental Protection Agency http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
Realistic Channel Modeling • Cost of deploying a model for VANETs is huge, • Need of VANETs simulators that can completely capture the VANETs system, • Channel measurements need to be taken into account while modeling VANETs, • Different scenarios - highway, urban areas and different times of day, • Aim is to model VANETs communication using realistic channel model. Using Unit disk models, Probabilistic models and Obstacle based models. http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
Epidemic Routing Protocol • Data dissemination protocol approach for VANETs, • Epidemic and probabilistic routing, • Over IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol, http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
Cross-Layer Design • To satisfy the different kind of application requirement cluster-based heterogeneous network is required. • Vehicles form a cluster and one of the elected cluster head is responsible for relaying data to LTE network. http://wnl.ku.edu.tr/
