  1. Welcome Parents! Mrs. Boyle and Ms. Heath 6th Grade Language Arts Please take a minute to fill out the information sheet that you picked up. 

  2. Mrs. Taylor is the long-term substitute for Mrs. Boyle.I have been teaching in the county for 10 years. I have three girls who graduated from Dominion HS in LCPS and I live in Leesburg with my husband. I have a BA and MS from Rutgers University and am currently working on my teaching licensure. Here is a picture of Mrs. Boyle and her new daughter Mollie

  3. Ms. Heath • I have been teaching in Loudoun County for 7 years. I taught in Maryland for 5 years. I am originally from a small town in PA. I have a BA in Special Education from Mercyhurst College, Autism certification from GMU and am currently working on my MS in Leadership and Curriculum and Development at GMU.

  4. Things To Expect This Year • Library is every other week. • There will be homework every night consisting of reading and sometimes vocabulary, grammar and spelling. • The students have Spanish every other day for 30 minutes during Language Arts (SAMS). • I will send home Scholastic Book Orders every month starting in October.

  5. Reading • We will be reading several novels as a class. • The students will participate in literature circles within the class later on in the year. • We will also be using the Interactive Readers and Accelerated Reader program. • We are participating in a 25 book challenge where the students will read and record throughout the year.

  6. Preparing for the Reading SOL • Vocabulary • Study Island • Reading Comprehension activities • Practice SOLs

  7. Types of WRITING we will work on this year. • Journal writing to a prompt • Creative/Descriptive • Reflective/Narrative • Research • Poetry • Grammar/Editing • Argumentative/Persuasive

  8. Incentive Program • Awesome Attitude Awards- If a student is caught doing something nice for someone else, they will receive an awesome attitude award. Every Friday, I choose one “AAA” for each block, and the winner will receive a candy bar or pack of gum. Students can nominate someone else for an “AAA”; however, they cannot nominate themselves. • RAVENS – Students can receive a RAVEN award ticket from any adult in the building for being 1) Respectful, 2) Responsible and/or 3) Ready. This school-wide PBIS initiative provides quarterly rewards.
