  5. 1. Change the percent tax or percent tip to a decimal 2. Multiply by the original cost or total. 3. To find the total, add the rounded tax or tip to the original price or subtract if discount. Tax Tip and Discount in your notes

  6. Lets see an example Example 1 Taylor buys a pair of jeans at the Gap and they cost $41.50, the tax in Arizona is 9.1% find the total cost. Step 1: 9.1% 0.091 Step 2: Multiply Tax $41.50 x .091 3.7765

  7. Step 3: Add rounded tax to original price $41.50 + 3.78 $45.28

  8. You try... 1.If the sales tax rate is 7.25% in California, then how much would you pay in Los Angeles for a pair of shoes that cost $39.00? 2. The price of a new car is $29,990. If the sales tax rate is 6.5%, then how much sales tax is being charged? What is the total cost for the car including tax? $41.83 $31,939.35

  9. Lets try something a little more challenging If you go out to eat with 3 friends and your meal was $72.50, there is 6.75% sales tax and you should tip the waiter 15%. How much should each person pay? Work this out in your notes so you have an example with more than one step.
