  1. Carbon capure and storage 1st SDM Joint Coordination Workshop, Bonn

  2. Outcome of Durban • Acceptance of CCS within the Clean Development Mechanism • CMP7 adopted modalities and procedures for CCS projects under CDM (10/CMP7) • CCS projects are eligible under the CDM • Outstanding topics for resolution by CMP8: • Eligibility of trans-boundary projects • Establishment of global CER reserve

  3. Key elements of the CCS modalities and procedures Detailed specifications of site selection Risk and safety assessment Environmental and socio-economic impact assessments Detailed provisions on monitoring Financial provisions Provisions for liability Accounting for non-permanence/seepage Changes to the CDM registry

  4. Key questions What will be the net amount of CO2 emissions avoided ? For how long is CO2 removed from the atmosphere ? Is this cost – beneficial ? And for whom ? What is an acceptable risk of uncontrolled CO2 releases ? How to create trust and confidence among stakeholders ? Which projects and sites qualify ?

  5. Operationalisation of CCS • DNV has earlier released recommended practices (RP) on capture and transport: • RP-J201 Qualification procedures for CO2 capture technologies, released in April 2010 • RP-J202 Qualification procedures for CO2 transport technologies, released in April 2010 • As a natural follow-up DNV is about to release: • RP-J203 Qualification procedures for CO2 storage technologies (expected May 2012) • Toether with this a service specification (DSS) with certificates will also be launched: • DSS402 Geological storage of CO2 (expected May 2012) • RP-J203 and DSS402 are relevant to turn the CMP decision into operations • Contacts: Elisabeth.Rose@dnv.comMike.Carpenter@dnv.com
