Vocabulary • Endorsements – Additional coursework that qualifies one to teach in specific areas/disciplines • Cohort – a group of students • Cooperating teacher (coop) – teacher in your assigned classroom • Supervisor/mentor – university personnel that observe student teachers • Field experience, practicum – time in schools • Portfolio – collection of artifacts and reflections • Standards – expectations for teacher licensure • Observation – supervisor visit to classroom

  6. VOCABULARY, CONT. • Seminar – a group meeting, usually with supervisors • Early field experience (EFE) – practica prior to student teaching • Student teaching – final semester experience; extended, daily time in a classroom • Student portal – individual site on CoTE website for record keeping

  7. Entering the professional world • Your behavior is now open to public scrutiny. You live in a “fishbowl”. • Voicemail greeting should be professional. • Internet information should be monitored for objectionable materials. • Demonstrate high standards of professional performance and attitude. Now is about learning! • Make mature decisions for you and for your students. • Use discretion when discussing field experiences and maintain a tone of professional courtesy.

Professional responsibilities attendance • Arrive on time and stay for the duration of the scheduled field placement. • Honor the intended timeframe and sequence of your placement experience • If absences or tardiness are necessary, communicate with the cooperating teacher and supervisor, where applicable, and make plans for makeup. • All absences must be made up.

  9. Professional responsibilitiesattire • Professional dress • No flip flops • No jeans • Clothing should be conservative and comfortable • Tattoos covered up; piercings removed • Your appearance should not be a distraction to the learning in the classroom

Placement Policies • All placements are made and confirmed by OCE. • Placements are subject to change by OCE but not by student request. • Placements are made to assure work experience with diversity. • Placements are not made in a school where a close relative, friend, and/or significant other is employed. • UIUC student is responsible for assuring completion of online evaluation by coop and student.

  11. Policies, cont. • You will also have a chance to confidentially evaluate each cooperating teacher. • Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from field placements. We use a 60 mile radius of C-U (a distance placement of over 20 miles should be expected at least once) • CBC, BBP, Mandated Reporter, and Safety Training clearance required prior to entry into classroom. • Absences must be made up.

FIRST YEAR Fall 2014 EdPr 250 EC Spring 2015 CI 420 • Field placement in local child care facility • Experiences with birth to 2 year old children • 24 field hours • Follow UIUC calendar • Evaluated by cooperating teacher • Field placement in kindergarten OR primary (1, 2, 3) • 7 weeks in field (March-April) • 8 am-12:00 pm • 60 mile radius of C-U campus • Follow UIUC calendar • 4 supervisor visits

SECOND YEAR Fall 2015 EdPr 438/420 Spring 2016 EdPr 432 EC • Field placement in local preschools/Pre-K within 60 miles • 16 week practicum (Aug-Dec.) • 8:00 am – 12:00 am • May work with cooperating teacher prior to starting UIUC courses • Follow UIUC calendar • 4 supervisor visits • Local, CPS, NW suburbs • Field placement starts after 6 wks. of class • 10 weeks in placement, 3 weeks of full take over • Evening seminars • Follow assigned school calendar

Student Teaching Application • DUE by April 18, 2014 • Log into the CoTE portal (http://cote.illinois.edu/) > click on Student Teaching Form Application • Fill out the appropriate sections based on your program and as accurately as you can at this time. • During September 2014, OCE will re-open the applications for editing; you will receive an email with more information at that time. • If your personal information changes between April and August (car, contact number, interest in pursuing ELL/bilingual approvals), please email Jay Mann (jaymann@illinois.edu) • You will have a chance to change your placement preferences next fall, if you wish.

Summer assignments • Bookmark OCE and CoTE website for use during the next two years in teacher education. • Familiarize yourself with both websites. • By August 15, clear the Criminal Background Check; Bloodborne pathogens training; Safety Training; and Mandated Reporter Training (all via CoTE) • Start thinking about housing and transportation for 2015-2016

  17. announcements • When emailing with a question, identify the teacher program and year you are in program. • When replying to email, always hit the reply so I have an historical understanding of the email. • Read through websites for instructions and information before calling or emailing for assistance. • Keep your mailbox cleaned out. • Use Illinois account.
