ESA/FAO GEOPortal (1) • A gateway to Global Earth Observation data, in support of all 9 SBA, developed by ESA in collaboration with FAO. • Currently operational and available on line at the link: http://www.geoportal.org. • One of the three portals developed in response to a set of requirements from the GEOsec for the implementation of a GEO Web Portal serving the GEO User Community. • Part of the GEOSS Common Infrastructure currently in the Initial Operational Capability phase. • Based on Open Source components, it can be freely installed and configured at GEO members’ premises. • It can be configured to create for example a Portal for a specific community.
ESA/FAO GEOPortal (2) • Single point of access to information, which is linked from various logically related Internet based applications and is of interest to the GEOSS user community. • It allows to search and discover services: • It complements Community Portals and other Portals operated by GEO Members and Participating Organizations and does not belong to any single member or organization: • Community portals should provide user interfaces for specific communities and as such should act as clients to specific services.
ESA/FAO GEOPortal Services • Based on the GEO recommended standards and following the Geospatial Portal Reference Architecture of the OGC the GEOPortal provides a variety of services: • Geospatial Portal Service providing interfaces to users for viewing, discovering data, information & services available in GEOSS. • Based on liferay opensource, integrating/displaying services via JSR168 portlets • Browse through a comprehensive directory of components and service providers. • Showcase datasets and services • Directory based on GeoNetwork catalogue • Portrayal Viewer Service allowing the display and handling of maps and context information from various sources through WMS services. • Intermap opensource WMS client • Retrieval of Earth observation education, training and capacity building resources. • Syndication of information feeds onto Globe • GeoRSS feeds • Interfaces to Catalogue Services of the GEOSS Clearinghouse, allowing distributed catalogue search in an interoperable manner. • Integration of new services via workflow tools
How to access data (1)? • Example: User searching for Floods data – Data Provider
How to access data (2)? • Example: through the FedEO clearinghouse

ESA-FAO GEOPortal Interfaces within GCI • With GEOSS Clearinghouses: • Tested during the AIP pilot 2007 through a catalogue client. • GEOSS Clearinghouses Interfaces (OGC CSW 2.0.2 standard) should be made available by the providers during GCI IOC for further testing activities with the GEO Portals for the full functional scope of the elements in order to ensure interoperability of the developments made by different providers. • With Registries: • Actually implemented in the ESA/FAO GEOPortal. • Feedbeck from GEOSec to provide more “graphical” interface (e.g. logos) means registries don’t provide sufficient information to be presented in the GEOPortal and additional info is routinely added for new registered and non registered components/services (content management). • Taxonomies for components within registries are poor and so enhanced when harvesting information from registry • Automated harvesting can be implemented only when last update available and a good eye to the quality of registrations
Next steps: ESA Participation to AIP Phase 2 • Proposal submitted in cooperation with several partners, aiming at augmenting the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) and at supporting the current GCI IOC phase. • Three different contributions. • GEOPortal in cooperation with FAO. • Maintenance of the current capabilities and functionalities (both operationally and in terms of content management). • Addition of new functionalities or improvement of the available ones. • Consolidation of interoperability and interfaces with the other GCI components (e.g. GEOSS Clearinghouses). • Feedback and needs from GEOSS User community, IOC Task Force and GEO Secretariat will be the main driver for the evolution of the GEOPortal.
Next steps: ESA Participation to AIP Phase 2 • FedEO EO Community Clearinghouse in cooperation with Eumetsat, International Charter “Space and Major Disasters”, CNES ….. • Allows distributed catalogue search of EO data and products using the HMA interoperability protocols defined for GMES and currently OGC best practises and standards. • Interface with the GEOPortal allows to provide users with full metadata (high quality). • Data ordering/download will be possible in future (respecting data policies). • Several EO mission owners over the world will be implementing the HMA interfaces (GMES, now Kopernikus). First implementations started. • Main activities will be to improve and consolidate the prototype developed in the AIP 2007 FedEO initiative and to increase the number of EO catalogues accessible through it.
Next steps: ESA Participation to AIP Phase 2 • SSE – Workflow, Conformance Testing and Test Environment. • Workflow Management Engine and Service Test Facility for conformance/compliance test of data and models to ensure proper and interoperable use of GEOSS components and services in applications and interfaces using the HMA standards consolidated in the framework of the AIP 2007 FedEO initiative and the OGC conformance testing. • Support the creation of new services and to test interfaces (for catalogues, orders, processing and access to the data). Conclusions • As part of the GCI IOC, the ESA/FAO GEOPortal already constitutes a main access point to worldwide information on Earth Observation capabilities and services. • ESA proposal for AIP consists of an environment where: • New GEOSS services can be built and GEOSS components can be tested with respect to a set of consolidated HMA and OGC standard based interfaces. • Access is provided to catalogue services with the standard interfaces. • Discovery of GEOSS resources is provided to the GEOSS User community. • Continuing work with Open Source components to compliment / upgrade GEOPortal • ESA willing to work with all scenarios / SBAs to showcase results and look for common goals
