  2. What are the Parts of Speech? • The parts of speech explains the ways words can be used in various contexts. Every word in the English language functions as at least one part of speech.

  3. What are the 8 Parts of Speech? • Noun • Pronoun • Verb • Adverb • Adjective • Preposition • Conjunction • Interjection

  4. Nouns • A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. • Examples: teacher, Michigan, computer

  5. Pronouns • A pronoun is a word that substitutes for a noun and refers to a person, place, thing, idea, or act that was mentioned previously or that can be inferred from the context of the sentence . • Examples: He, him, her, she, it, they, ours, we, us, them

  6. Verbs • A verb expresses an action or state of being. • Example: swimming, studying, yelling

  7. Adverbs • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Examples: much, thoroughly, quickly • Hint: Adverbs usually end in “ly”

  8. Adjectives • An adjective is a word or combination of words that modifies/describes a noun. • Examples: blue, tiny, gritty, pretty, large

  9. Prepositions • A preposition is a word or phrase that shows the relationship of a noun to another noun. • Examples: by, beyond, above, beneath, over, under, from, with • Hint: Think of direction when trying to identify prepositions

  10. Conjunctions • A conjunction is a word that connects other words, phrases, or sentences. • Examples: and, but, or, because

  11. Interjections • An interjection is a word, phrase, or sound used as an exclamation (!) and capable of standing by itself. • Examples: Oh! Hey! Ouch! Boo! Wow!

Lets Practice!  Underline the nouns and circle the verbs in the following sentences: • The line snapped and the boat rocked as Casey hooked the huge, green fish. • Jordan ran down the long court while dribbling the ball. • The hummingbird zipped quickly from flower to flower to enjoy the tasty nectar.
