Nouns • A noun is a person, place, thing or idea. • Examples: teacher, Michigan, computer
Pronouns • A pronoun is a word that substitutes for a noun and refers to a person, place, thing, idea, or act that was mentioned previously or that can be inferred from the context of the sentence . • Examples: He, him, her, she, it, they, ours, we, us, them
Verbs • A verb expresses an action or state of being. • Example: swimming, studying, yelling
Adverbs • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Examples: much, thoroughly, quickly • Hint: Adverbs usually end in “ly”
Adjectives • An adjective is a word or combination of words that modifies/describes a noun. • Examples: blue, tiny, gritty, pretty, large
Prepositions • A preposition is a word or phrase that shows the relationship of a noun to another noun. • Examples: by, beyond, above, beneath, over, under, from, with • Hint: Think of direction when trying to identify prepositions
Conjunctions • A conjunction is a word that connects other words, phrases, or sentences. • Examples: and, but, or, because
Interjections • An interjection is a word, phrase, or sound used as an exclamation (!) and capable of standing by itself. • Examples: Oh! Hey! Ouch! Boo! Wow!
