  3. Reckless or Cautious? • Cautious risks involve being aware of a risk and taking action to prevent potentially dangerous or unsafe outcomes. People who take cautious risks think through the situation first.

  4. Reckless or Cautious? • Cautious Risk Takers • Recognize the potential risk • Determine steps to reduce the risk • Develop a safety plan • Rely on the support of others • Use available resources • Stay alert

  5. Reckless or Cautious? • Reckless risks are more likely to result in injury damage to property or death. People who take reckless risks don’t stop to think through the situation.

  6. Reckless or Cautious • Reckless risk takers: • Act impulsively • Aren’t aware of the risk • Don’t plan ahead • Combine several risky behaviors • Aren’t concerned about the impact their actions may have on others • Don’t use available resources to protect themselves

  7. Turn to “Reduce the Risk” on page 2. Work with a partner to complete the activity sheet.

  8. Cautious risks involve well-thought-out plans that are easily put into action.

  9. Leading Causes of Death from Injury • The leading causes of death from injury among teens and young adults include: • Motor-vehicles • Homicide • Suicide • Drowning • Poisoning (including alcohol and drug overdose) • Off-road vehicles • Unintentional firearm injuries • Falls • Pedestrian injuries • Fire and burns

  10. With your partner, write down 3 things you could do to help prevent these things from happening to you or your friends.

  11. As a class, we are going to create a Top 10 list of injury prevention strategies for class and put them on a poster.
