  2. Beginnings • Chandragupta • Considered the first unifier of India and the first genuine emperor of India. • Killed an unpopular king to begin the Mauryan empire. • Ruled 320-298 BCE • Died of old age.

  3. Building an Empire • Chandragupta began empire without an army. • He raised a large army • 600,000 soldiers on foot • 30,000 on horseback • 9,000 elephants • Levied high taxes to maintain large army. • Large army aided him to increase the area of the empire.

  4. Chandragupta’s Style of Rule • Tough-minded policies to hold the empire together. • spying on citizens • use of political assassinations • Divided the empire into four provinces, headed by a royal prince. • Responsible for collection of taxes.

  5. The Mauryan Empire Under Asoka • Chandragupta’s grandson • Ruled Mauryan Empire 269-232 BCE • Achieved status of emperor by first serving as governor of two provinces.

  6. Style of Rule • At first, Asoka followed his grandfather’s style of leadership. • military conquest • Embraced the teachings of Buddhism. • religion that promotes “peace to all beings” • Promised to treat the people of the empire fairly and humanely.

  7. Accomplishments • Improved trade and communication • Sponsored an extensive network of roads • So that he could easily visit the empire • rest stops with wells (for water)

  8. Decline of the Mauryan Empire • After Asoka’s death, the Mauryan Empire was controlled by a series of weaker and ineffective leaders. • Areas to the north and to the south of the empire declared their independence.
