Building an Empire • Chandragupta began empire without an army. • He raised a large army • 600,000 soldiers on foot • 30,000 on horseback • 9,000 elephants • Levied high taxes to maintain large army. • Large army aided him to increase the area of the empire.
Chandragupta’s Style of Rule • Tough-minded policies to hold the empire together. • spying on citizens • use of political assassinations • Divided the empire into four provinces, headed by a royal prince. • Responsible for collection of taxes.
