  2. Working Conditions • Conditions for all workers deteriorated during the 1830’s • . Skilled artisans, who had originally formed unions to preserve their own interests, began to ally them- selves with unskilled laborers • Although only 1 or 2 percent of U.S. workers were organized, the • !830s and 1840s saw dozens of strikes--many for higher wages, but some for a shorter workday.

  3. Immigrations increases • European immigration rose dramatically in the United States between 1830 and 1860. In the decade 184S-!8S4 alone nearly 3 million immigrants were added to the U.S. population that had numbered just over 20 million • The majority of Immigrants were German and Irish men.

  4. Child labor • Children started at the age of 6 • Children was cruel and unusual • Children were payed less than minimum wage • Children were punished by beatings if they didn't’t work hard enough.
