E N D
Why congress adopted Dec. Indp. • Olive Branch Petition • Creation of rebel military • British response- shut down trade, size merchant ships, free slaves, shell Norfolk, VA • Colonies- Congress and Colonies reconcile, common sense, open American trade to everyone except Britain
Why did American’s become Loyalists or neutral? • STABILITY!!!!!! • Worry of instability (violence, aggression, resistance- i.e. Boston tea party, tarring and feathering) • 1/5th of population –strongest support in places with internal strife (pg 177) • Welfare relied on Britain (jobs, trade) • Recent emigrant • Neutral to survive- doubts
Evolution of American and British Strategy • C.A. (Continental army) • Weak in fields and discipline • Very unconventional- ambush, surprise • Relied heavily on local militia • Poorly supplied • BA (British Army) • Pros, conventional • Try to cut America in two, isolate New England too difficult take Philly • Food shortages- take advantage of citizens • Help from Hessians
Surrender at Saratoga • BA- John Burgoyne- attack from Canada pushed back by Arnold and militia • Significance • = lost entire army *France decided that Americans could win and form alliance • Spain adds to the alliance also (land)
Failure of southern strategy • British fighting global war • Try to regain southern colonies- economic reasons • Ills done by BA follow, more resentment =more rebels • Divided British army in two to follow CA • Sandwiched between CA and French • Also lost India, west indies and Florida
