I have been to Venice a few times now, and as long as I leave a few years between each visit, I know I will always have fond memories of this elegant yet decadent and artistic place, that has joined lovers and cynics together for years. I travelled to this magical estate of intricate art in December when few people were there. A lone Christmas tree and a flurry of snowflake animated a leaden sky and there was no shortage of choirs and food markets. I liked it. Better than the summer period when the city is crowded and you can't move around. On my first of four days, the mist was cloaking the canals as I went walking round the quiet yet mysterious backstreets. Strange, I could hear many people talking but I could not see them. Every tiny alleyway and arched bridge seemed to echo unseen voices when I looked down into the hazy water. Not everyone, appreciates the cold, and on this occasion, a bitter wind greeted me at every turn. But I was rugged up and I didn't care. Glad to be here in one of my favorite cities. Whilst I was there I purchased several masks, which any visitor must have. Beautiful shops selling prints, lace and glass, and of course, a boat ride if you want. The main square St Marco, can be expensive as I found out when I dropped by for a pizza and drink. It was far cheaper outside of the center and the good thing was, it was not more than ten minutes to walk in. There were many small eating houses and hostels but it was wise to book an owners direct in Italy before arriving. But not a problem inspecting some small apartments or rooms for further nights. owners direct in Italy somewhere Between Christmas and the Carnival in February, Venice in my opinion is enchantingly cold but warm spirited. The Carnival events give you the opportunity to wear a costume with mask and attend the ball. It all begins around the 26th February. The Grand ball will be as how much you are willing to spend. Somewhere in the pretentious gothic facades overlooking the mysterious misty canals you may forget how chilly it can get; walking around Venice beside very pleasing and incredible wardrobes of ornate clothes on drifting quiet figures. But if you like the heat and the light and do not mind the jazzy mad setup, you could find a holiday home on the Lido and have a beach and city break in the warmer months. There are some budget airlines and hotels if you book early. You do not need to buy books and look up, that might spoil it. Just make a booking and turn up and let it be a surprise. Check your airline and any amount of accommodation should you not find something here.
