What is Production Planning? • Production planning, or manufacturing process planning, deals with the task of defining how a product is made. In this process, specifications of incoming products (JDF Intent resources) are converted into manufacturing or process plans (JDF Processes) Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004

Challenges • The graphic arts industry has evolved rapidly in recent years • Increased competition • Increased pressure on throughput schedules • More print runs that are smaller • Segmentation Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004
Effect • Need for automation, efficiency, higher productivity • Development of digital islands in printing companies • Digitally optimized islands all are dependent on a planning function structured for analog and largely manual processing • Lacking this digital bridge, there is no total cross-departmental automation. • Further efficiency improvements can only be achieved through cross-departmental automation enabled by a digital production planning solution Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004

Synapse UpFront • Synapse UpFront delivers on the need for cross-departmental automation enabled by a digital production planning solution • Provides a digital solution for the production planning process • Enables automation through open cross-departmental JDF communication Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004
Synapse UpFront • Groundbreaking production planning tool • Helps production planners build jobs more easily, faster, and more reliably • Creates accurate job documentation • Replaces folding dummies and hand-drawn layouts Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004
Synapse UpFront • Because of the detailed knowledge of Synapse UpFront, it can easily capture accurate, re-usable production data that can easily be exported as JDF for re-use! • Trimmed size • Trims and lips • Sheet size • Gripper • Signature marks, color bar, etc. • Cutting details • Folding patterns • Number and order of bindery signatures • Details on binding process Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004

Dramatic Results! • “We implemented a Synapse UpFront solution at Action Printing in 2002. In less than a year we saw savings come from a number of areas. Wasted film and plates declined from 5.7 percent to 1.4 percent. Streamlining the workflow—reducing the re-creation of layouts and the rekeying of data—allowed us to reduce staff. And there are far fewer delays on press due to missing or wrong information.” • “I believe that for every dollar we invested in good job planning tools like Synapse UpFront software, we saved over one hundred dollars in the plant.” • Peter Doyle, Operations Manager • Action Printing, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004

More happy customers! • Nielsen utilizes Creo’s Synapse UpFront job planning software as its entry point for job specifications. The latest 3.0 version of UpFront is based on JDF. It hands down all of the job’s specifications, such as the overall size of the book, the trim dimensions, and the quantity of the job to PrimaPlus’ AMRYS connection. • “Before we instituted this JDF workflow with PrimaPlus, the operators would have to look everything up on a job ticket and set all the adjustments throughout the machine by hand. Now we can have the JDF workflow presetting PrimaPlus automatically as the signatures are coming off the press. That gives us predictable and repeatable results from information that’s organized within the workflow. As a result, Nielsen is now able to turnaround most jobs in from 30 minutes to an hour on its PrimaPlus. And we’ve only been running it for two monthsThat‘s amazing.” • Ray Hartmann , Senior VP Equipment Technology & Engineering, RR Donnelley Production Planning and JDF @ GraphExpo 2004
