What Is Teaching Mixed-Ability ? A teacher teaches a class which has students who are clearly of different levels and abilities.
Varieties of Students Ability in Class A. Strong Student ( Fast Learner ) B. Quiet Student c. Weak Student ( Slow Learner )
Work Grouping • Pair Work a. strong with strong student b. weak with weak student c. strong with weak student (the best choice)
Group Work a. Depends on the number of students. However, having a small group is the best solution b. the groups could be mixed levels or similar ones
Whole class – Mingles -> To get interaction between one student and the others -> To support the weaker student and to get the opportunity for the stronger ones.
The Example of Mingle Activity : “find someone who” * Students may have the same, different questions or mixture. For example: a. Do you have a CD Player? b. Have you eaten fish and chips? c. Do you like tennis?
Conclusion • Pair work, Group work and Mingles are the solutions / strategies of teaching mixed-abilities. • The writer prefers Mingle Activity as a tool not only to get interaction and but also to achieve a task
