RATIONALE To help the students learn more about the social studies and the five strands which it contains.
American Heritage • This strand refers to those aspects of the past that help to make the American people unique among the peoples of the world while at the same time recognizing what we hold in common with other people.

American Heritage Activities • Read a biography • Visit the Ohio Historical Center • Use detective skills to uncover stones of immigrants to the U.S. • Do a report on a famous American • Role play Supreme Court positions • Make a plantation • Ask parents to share stories and music of childhood • Celebrate holidays of cultural heritage of members of the class • Draw pictures of related events and display illustrations • Create a timeline of life at that time
People in Societies This strand recognizes that the United States and the world encompass many different racial, ethnic, and religious groups. . This strand also recognizes that factors such as gender and class provide people with different perspectives on issues.

ACTIVITIES Categorize different economic activities as consumption or production. Determine the land and resources needed to produce a certain good. Explain that the demand for factors of production is derived from the demand of goods and services. Match each factor of production with the payment received. Explain that individuals and households use income to consume goods and services. Identify the factors that may influence a producer’s decision to supply a good or service. Describe a market and ifdentify examples of markets Discuss how a budget can help make more appropriate consumer decisions.

CONCLUSION There are several different branches in the Social Studies Curriculum. It is the teachers responsibility to know and integrate these branches into their daily lesson plans. Enriched activities in these daily lesson plans will lead to growth of knowledge in social studies.
