  1. What is Digital Citizenship? • The concept of Digital Citizenship finds its origins in the principle norms of accepted behavior while using technological devices. • With so much more of our interaction occurring online it will become more important to have proper procedures and restrictions in place to assure a respectful dialogue in the digital environment. • These principles can be broken down into nine basic tenets.

  2. 1. Digital Access for all members of society. • Not everyone has the same opportunities to access technology due to income inequality or a lack of funding for social programs in certain areas. • Society is moving towards a model that has greater involvement of technology in everyday life. • Those who do not have the chance to interact with new technologies will not benefit in equally. • Increasing inclusion in accessing the digital environment helps to maintain the advancement for all into digital citizenship.

  3. 2. Digital Commerce through Purchases and Sales. • Before the 21st century, online and electronic purchases were not as important, but now make up a large share of the economy with sites such as Amazon and EBay. • Though most of these exchanges are perfectly legal, there is still an undercurrent of negative influences that exist. • These may range from illegal downloading, piracy, child access to adult sites and illicit gambling. • Further, identity theft can occur at less reputable sites, which signals that consumers must be aware of being efficient, effective consumers while online. BUYER BEWARE!!

  4. 3. Digital Communication through Information Exchange. • Communication has changed a lot in the past century. • In the 1800’s, communication was limited to mail and for the better part of the 1900’s, communication, would still be limited to the telephone and faster mail systems. • In the 21st century, communication has grown into an interconnected network of instant communication methods which includes: email, cellular technology, instant messaging & social networking. • However, there is still the necessity for instructing individuals on appropriate behavior when using these forms of communication.

  5. 4. Digital Literacy through teaching and learning about technology. • Which technologies should be focused upon and also how should we properly instruct individuals on appropriate use? • Working environments, which is what the education system prepares a learner for, have included many technologies that are not taught in schools such as Videoconferencing or group wikis. • With the increase in information sharing, persons in the workplace must adapt to using methods of finding information digitally, which means that workers must be taught how to learn in the correct manner to match the speed that this occurs. • They must also be able to use the many access points available to accomplish these tasks. Information literacy requires instructing individuals to adapt to this new, fast-paced environment.

  6. 5. Digital Etiquette through Procedural Standard of Electronic Conduct • Proper use of the technology is at the top of the list for Digital Citizenship. • Behavior that is viewed to be improper is recognized readily when viewed, but many who embark to use modern technologies have had no teaching on proper digital conduct. • It is important to instruct users about proper use, but this is sometimes difficult as many are unwilling to discuss their views on this concept. • This creates the necessity for rules and regulations associated with use of the technology. • The true goal is to educate users to take responsibility for their actions as members of the digital citizenry.

  7. 6. Digital Laws and Personal Responsibility in the Electronic World. • Laws about digital environments dictate the rules associated with use of technology in a legal, social manner. Uses such as identity theft or other cybercrimes are representative of actions considered unethical or illegal. • However, general use in the accepted parameters allowed by law are representative of ethical and legal uses of the technologies available. • Ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law. It is incredibly important that all users are aware that theft, destruction or identity theft in the online world are criminal offenses. • While online, awareness of these laws is important because, use of invasive/destructive programming, criminal downloads or outright plagiarism is considered illegal.

  8. 7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities Available to All. • Like the rights you have in the normal world, users also have a set of rights similar to this while online. • Whether they’re rights to personal privacy or freedom of speech, a knowledge of these rights must be understood by online users. • For everyone to enjoy the rights given to digital users, there comes a certain amount of personal responsibility for your actions. • The rights a user wishes to have must be also extended to other users to maintain a fair and free environment. To maintain efficiency and progress these two ideas must be able to interact together.

  9. 8. Digital Health and Wellness in the Technological World. • Proper techniques and usage limits should be discussed under the context of Digital Citizenship. • Overuse can cause problems with the eyes and hands, but there are also issues associated with human psychology, such as Electronic addiction to internet use in the form of excessive social media or gaming. • The dangers associated with these technologies must be discussed with users so they understand what can occur and establish boundaries through education.

  10. 9. Digital Security for Safety in the Electronic World. • There will always be unforeseen circumstances or criminal elements in any environment that exists & this is true for the Digital World too. • Even with education applied to users, there will always be the danger of falling prey to malicious intents or accidents, which create the need for users to protect themselves from such intrusions or detours. • Whether speaking on viruses, data loss or surge protectors for devices, digital citizens must take all necessary precautions to protect their identity, data and equipment from any outside influence that might disrupt their overall productivity.
