  1. Grade 11 IB Parent Night

  2. A Brief Program Overview • Students are taking 6 IB courses from the hexagon below

  3. The IB Diploma in a Nutshell… • Students will take at least 3 exams at HL (Higher Level) in grade 12 • Students will take 2-3 exams at SL (Standard Level) over grade 11 and 12 • Altogether, these courses will be evaluated to give a total Diploma score out of 42, with 3 additional points for ToK and the Extended Essay for a total of 45 • Students are also responsible for completing CAS and an Extended Essay

  4. CAS • Creativity, Action, Service • IB cares about the education of the whole student • 50 hours required in each area, and a minimum of 3 activities per area • Students meet with their CAS Counsellor several times over the course of their time in IB • Recording of hours through ManageBac

  5. Extended Essay • Planning typically begins in 2013 and all continuing IB students will have extended essay time in June during the exam block • 3500-4000 word paper on a topic of their choosing…can be from any discipline that they are in • Time management is essential to the completion of this task • Last year’s timeline is available at ibcb.ca

  6. This year’s courses… • IB1 is an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging year • It is the first full year of the IB Diploma curriculum • IB rubrics will come into play on major assignments • Some formal IB assignments will be completed this year • Some subjects will examine this year

  7. Common IB1 Challenges • Grade 11 is the toughest year of IB • Time management is the key to success • Smart homework strategies • Students are encouraged to take educated risks by engaging in class material • Read the question first then answer that specific question • Perfectionism: “Be perfect in the time that you have”

  8. Stress management and health • Sleep is the friend of an IB student • IB study guides are excellent resources, but they’re much cheaper if you purchase them from the US  (amazon.com) • Students must make and take time for themselves • Understand that being excellent does not necessarily mean being perfect • Be perfect/excellent in the time that you have

  9. When times get tough… • Your child may be different this September than they were last September… • Keep the lines of communication open (IB Coordinator, Guidance Counsellors, Teachers, Vice Principals, Principal) • Home support…and cookies or ice cream or both

  10. Extra Help • Students are encouraged to seek out their teachers for help and, if needed, to seek out tutors at school • Guidance can point your child in the direction of a tutor • Many departments have their own allotted extra help times

  11. IB Marks and What They Mean • Students and parents need to adjust to the different benchmarks used • The established conversions are as follows • 7 = 96-100%; 6 = 90-95%; 5 = 80-89%; 4 = 70-79%; 3 = 60-69%; 2 = 50-59% 1 = Failing Condition

  12. Exams and IB Fees • All IB1 students this year are Anticipated Candidates • The IB Annual Fee sheet will go home the first week of October • If they are taking an exam this year, they will register in mid-October • One-time exam registration fee of $175 (good for both years) + $120 per exam taken • Exam fees are normally collected in January • Exams take place between May 2nd and 22nd – parent supervisors are needed

  13. University and Option Sheets • What universities want (6 X 4U/M courses with some pre-requisites) • Engineering: ENG4U, SCH4U, SPH4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 1 other • Sciences: ENG4U, 2 of 3 Sciences, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 1 other • Commerce: ENG4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 3 other • Liberal Arts: ENG4U, + 5 others • Most IB students have 8 + to choose from • Visit university sessions

  14. Option Sheets • February is option sheet time • Students really need to have an idea of what university programs to which they want to apply…check electronicinfo.ca • A good idea to meet with either IB Coordinator or Guidance for advice • April: Student viability in the program is checked at this time

  15. ManageBac • an electronic community meant to quickly connect teachers, students, and parents • Parents are able to see what their child joins, aiding them in assisting their child at home • Please ask your child’s subject teacher about it if the course is not appearing • Email norine.mckee@ocdsb.ca if you do not have an account
