The six subject groups • Group 1 Language • Group 2 Second language • Group 3 Individuals and societies • Group 4 Experimental sciences • Group5 Mathematics and computer science • Group 6 Arts and options • 3 x HL courses 240 hours • 3 x SL courses 150 hours
Award of the Diploma • As a general guide a score of 24 out of a possible 45 points will result in the awarding of the IB Diploma. • However it is more complicated than that. • There are two sets of scores as follows:
A total score of 24-27 points • A numeric grade is awarded to all six subjects • CAS requirements are met • A grade of A-E is awarded to TOK and Extended Essay with at least a D in one • No grade 1 in any subject • No grade 2 in any HL subject • No more than 3 grades 3 or below • At least 12 points in HL subjects • At least 9 points in SL subjects
A total score of 28 points and above • A numeric grade is awarded to all six subjects • CAS requirements are met • A grade of A-E is awarded to TOK and Extended Essay with at least a D in one • No grade 1 in any subject • No grade 2 in any HL subject • No more than 3 grades 3 or below • At least 11 points in HL subjects • At least 8 points in SL subjects
What do the scores mean? • 7 Excellent A+ • 6 Very good A • 5 Good B • 4 Satisfactory C • 3 Mediocre D • 2 Poor E+ • 1 Very poor E

Progress to Year 12 • The following performance standard is required for progress from Year 11 IB Diploma into Year 12. • Students undertake an exam in each subject at the end of Year 11. • Each subject then gives a grade 1-7 based on the exam result. • A minimum score of 24 is required to continue in the Diploma Programme in Year 12. • That a student who fails to achieve a minimum of 24 is given two alternatives: • To repeat Year 11 or • To convert from Diploma Programme to a Certificate course.
Progress to Year 12 • The score of 24 has the following conditions: (based on current Diploma Award conditions) • That students gain no grade 1 in any subject. • That students gain no grade 2 in any HL subject
21-23 points • Satisfactory CAS performance • Meeting Extended Essay requirements and deadlines to date: • Meeting TOK requirements and deadlines to date: • Meeting IA requirements and deadlines to date: • Results of completed Internal Assessments • Teacher recommendations
Certificates • No core requirements • No SL/HL specific requirements • Allows students to concentrate on subject scores • Certificate issued with subject scores • University implications • May be required to do foundation course • May reduce range of options • Less impact on US options
