Elements, Compounds, & Mixtures The Classification of Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Anything that isn’t matter is energy. Matter
The smallest piece of an element is an atom. Cannot be broken down into smaller substances by ordinary means. The smallest piece of matter that still has the properties of this type of matter. Examples are all the substances listed on the Periodic Table, like carbon, uranium, neon, copper,… Elements
Compounds • The smallest piece of a compound is a molecule. • Two or more atoms that are bonded together to form a new substance with new characteristics
Cannot be separated except by chemical reactions. Combined elements lose their own identities to become something new. Elements always combine in definite ratios. Compounds
Mixtures • Combination of 2 or more substances that are mixed (not bonded) together. • Can be separated by physical means using physical properties like melting point, boiling point, density, color, shape, magnetism, solubility, …
Mixtures • No definite proportions or single formula • Individual parts retain their own properties
Homogeneous Mixtures • Homogeneous mixtures are the same all the way through. • Examples are solutions like Pepsi, brass,
Heterogeneous Mixture • Heterogeneous mixtures are not evenly mixed like Raisin Bran cereal. Many of the raisins fall to the bottom.
