  1. Clearinghouse Status and PlansMarch 2001 Douglas Nebert Clearinghouse Coordinator FGDC

  2. Geospatial Data Clearinghouse • “One-stop-shop” search system for geospatial data • Data are described through metadata • Metadata is made searchable through many local catalogs known as “Clearinghouse Nodes” • Each catalog is registered with FGDC • The search forms can search all catalogs

  3. General Clearinghouse Architecture Clearinghouse Nodes User Gateway(s) Web Client Web Server Web Server

  4. Gateways • Regional “entry points” hosting search forms: 6 within US, 5 intl. planned • Additional unofficial search gateways at many registered Nodes for local search • Now commercial and open-source software

  5. Map Service Spatial Data Data Download Clearinghouse Node: a searchable metadata catalog Z39.50 Server Translation API Database or Index Meta- Data Internet • Isite open-source software used widely • Commercial db/server solutions from RTSe, Compusult, and BlueAngel

  6. Search Interfaces Three interface formats now available: • Place-name based search interface • Map plus place-name based interface • Search “Wizard” interface under refinement

  7. Search Wizard Overview • Search wizard being implemented in two forms to help select servers based on GSDI Registry metadata. Uses: • Geographic area selection • Scope or Extent of collections • Thematic classification as per ISO 19115 Categories tags

  8. Step 1: Select Nodes based on ISO 19115 Categories

  9. Step 2: Define Geographic Area of Interest

  10. Step 3: Review, select/deselect from ‘found’ servers

  11. Step 4: Compose query of selected servers, spatial extent is re-used

  12. Step 5: Search and request results

  13. Step 6: See titles of results from a given server

  14. Step 7: Display and evaluate the metadata

  15. 01

  16. Plans for Clearinghouse, 2001 • Improve usability of the search interfaces • Test and support proposed extensions to the OpenGIS Catalog Services specification • Support ISO 15046-15 Metadata Standard • Increase number of Clearinghouse Nodes • Improve referral capabilities to locate appropriate servers and data • Deployment of a public domain search program

  17. Clearinghouse and the Geography Network • The Geography Network resources are now part of the Clearinghouse • The Geography Network “entries” exist in a catalog that is now searchable through the Clearinghouse Geography Network Web Client NSDI Gateway Node2 Node3

  18. What’s missing? • The Geography Network should be able to search the NSDI Nodes as if they were GN members – in parallel • Mapping service linkages could be encouraged by all providers in metadata Geography Network User X NSDI X Nodes GN catalog

  19. User/Client User/Client Service Data Data Service Catalogs of Data and Services • Current OpenGIS Testbed prototypes focus on the discovery of services that relate to available data • Current Clearinghouse services focus on the discovery of data and the services related to the data • Either is valid: both need data and service ingredients
