  1. SOUZOU – Creativity through Procedural Modeling NSF Creative IT Workshop, Washington DC. January 15 & 16, 2009 Yoshihiro Kobayashi, Ph.D.: School of Architecture and Landscape Arch. Peter Wonka, Ph.D.: Dept. of CS and Engineering, PRISM Lab Yuanyuan Li: RA in Ph.D program at Dept. of CS and Engineering Arizona State University

  2. Creative Design Works at School of Architecture, ASU

  3. Procedural Cityscape/Architectural Modeling based on Shape-Grammar

  4. The current computer technologies have changed architectural design as shown.

  5. Motivation: • How can creativity support tools facilitate the architectural design process of complex geometric design? • How can procedural modeling (artificial creativity) and user interaction (human creativity) be best integrated? • Current Problems on CAD/CG packages • Complicated GUI: Steep Learning Curve • Long Modeling Time: Requirement of writing scripts and learning functions • Reusability of Design Strategy: Need a framework to reuse style/strategy • Single-user Interface: Not communication tools • Solution • Multi-user interface: Microsoft Surface, NEXTGEN • Procedural Modeling using not scripts but images/data • Research method • Implementation of Creativity Support Tools for Architectural Design • User Test in architectural design studios.

  6. Vector Field Distance Field Tensor Field

  7. Our Target Professional Designer Professional Practical Design Implementing Tools Student + Conceptual Design Using Existing Tools Non-Designer Design for New Market AI / IA

  8. Screen Shot Images of Design using our Tools

  9. SUMMARY Data-driven : Visual & Editable contents such as Vector, Scalar, Tensor filed Multiple Elements Support: Not packing but distribution + Deformation/patch Short Time to Generate Outputs (not for optimization but for creativity) Multiple Touch & User Interactions for Communication
