Integumentary System

Learn about the integumentary system, the organ system that protects the body from damage and regulates various functions such as temperature, excretion, and sensation. Explore the four types of membranes and the different layers of the skin. Create a model of the integumentary system for better understanding.

  1. Integumentary System

  2. Integumentary Organ System • integumentum = latin for covering • protects the body from damage • organs include skin, hair, scales, nails

  3. How does it protect? • waterproofs • cushions the deeper layers of the body • excretes wastes • regulates temperature • sensor for pain pressure and temperature

  4. Integumentary System

  5. 4 Types of Membranes • Serous membranes • Mucous membranes • Cutaneous membranes • Synovial membranes

  6. Serous membranes Line body cavities that lack openings to the outside.

  7. Mucus Membranes Line the cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body.

  8. Cutaneous membranes Cover the outside of the body.

  9. Synovial membranes Line the joint cavities between the ends of bones at free moving (synovial) joints.

  10. Skin

  11. Epidermis • Epidermis is made of stratified squamous epithelium.

  12. Melanin Production

  13. Skin Cancer • Cutaneous carcinomas in upper layer • Cutaneous melanomas in lower epidermis

  14. Dermis • Dermis is made of connective tissue, epithelial tissue, smooth muscle tissue, nervous tissue, and blood.

  15. Hypodermis • composed of loose connective tissue and adipose tissue • functions: -conserves heat -carries major blood vessels

  16. Hypodermis

  17. Hair Formation

  18. Glands • Sebaceous (associated with hair) • Nails (keratinized cells) • Sweat (exocrine) -apocrine (pitsl) -eccrine (forehead, neck, back)

  19. Your Task: • Draw or create a model of the integumentary system. Include the following: • Hair -Erector pili muscle • Epidermis -Melanocyte • Dermis -adipose cells • Sweat gland -Subcutaneous layer (hypodermis) • Blood vessels (in the correct layer) • Sensory receptor (touch receptor) • Sebacious Gland You will use this on your quiz, scheduled for Monday. You can include name labels on your visual.
