Unleashing the Gospel “The crucial moment of unleashing of the gospel to advance throughout the nations was the Jerusalem council described in Acts 15.” “Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas.” –Acts 15:22a

Unleashing the Gospel Crucial Points: • People Groups: • Definition of a people group • 27,000 in the world • 14,000 reached since the time of Christ • 13,000 people groups unreached • If God had not given us the Bible, what would we know about Him? • General Revelation vs. • Special Revelation

Unleashing the Gospel Crucial Points: • Every person within the 27,000 people groups know that: • They have a broken relationship with their creator • Every single culture has a religion • Everyone worships something • Yet, salvation is through Christ alone. • We often forget that those to whom we witness are not a blank slate.

It includes theory(ies) of mission, the study and teaching of mission, as well as the research, writing, and publication of works regarding mission.” -Evangelical Dictionary of Missions Foundational Understanding: General Etymology Missio = Latin for “sending” Ology = Greek for “study of” Study of the expansion of Christianity

Unleashing the Gospel Light in a Dark World • Used by Jesus and Isaiah (Mt 5:14, Is 49:6) • Light = knowledge Darkness = ignorance • Light in the world also implies good deeds • Light suggests joy and hope (Is 9:2-7) • Light and darkness presupposes spiritual warfare. (Acts 26:18, 2 Cor 4:4, Eph 6:13-18) • Importance of prayer • The knees of His saints • The devil trembles

  8. Unleashing the Gospel Making Him Known: • Everyone has a religion • With their religion comes spiritual baggage • We must be prepared to present the Truth of the Gospel in culturally appropriate ways. • Missiology reminds us to consider what the Gospel means for the lives of people.

Unleashing the Gospel A Global Movement • Persistence in Big-Picture Vision • The disciples stuck to the ultimate direction Christ had given them, despite persecution and circumstances. • Boldness in Public Witness • The ordeal of public trial in biblical times • The continued call to suffering as an aspect of obedience to missions.

  10. Unleashing the Gospel A Global Movement: • Faithfulness to Accelerate Gospel Breakthrough • The Jerusalem Council: To ALL people • The Priority of Gospel Breakthrough • The Importance of declaring the Word of God to faithfully work toward biblical churches around the world.

Unleashing the Gospel Apostolic Suffering • A Strategy of Suffering noun:feelings of mental or physical pain noun:   misery resulting from affliction noun:   a state of acute pain noun:   psychological suffering • Where the gospel is preached and people are responding, there will always be people suffering for Christ.

Unleashing the Gospel Apostolic Suffering • What is a Martyr? • Someone who is killed because of their faith? • Someone who would rather die than deny their faith? • Someone who dies in any manner while in the service of their faith? • The above, but only if they die in a way they would not have experienced at home?

  18. Unleashing the Gospel Apostolic Suffering • What is a Martyr? • “The cause, not the suffering, makes a genuine martyr.” St. Augustine • T.S. Eliot describes a martyr in one of his plays as one “who has become an instrument of God, who has lost his will in the will of God . . . The martyr no longer desires anything for himself. . .“

Unleashing the Gospel • God’s Purpose in Martyrdom • Suffering for Christ is always voluntary • Martyrdom is the function God gives some to “die for the sake of Christ and His gospel.” • Apostolic Hope • The hope of global revival is a call to advance the gospel, to unite in prayer, and to live in vibrant expectancy.
