  2. TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES ACTION: Describe the organization, capabilities & limitations of Armor/Mech Division ADA units and the role of ADA in support of Combat Operations CONDITIONS: Given a Guided discussion in a classroom environment and Power Point presentation D4-118. STANDARD: Understand capabilities & limitations of Armor/Mech Division ADA units and the role of ADA in support of Combat Operations

  3. SAFETY, RISK, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS • Safety Requirements: None • Risk Assessment Level: Low • Environmental Considerations: None

  4. 1) Mission. 2) Weapon systems. 3) Planning Considerations. 4) Employment guidelines. OUTLINE

  5. ADA MISSION To protect the force and selected geopolitical assets from aerial attack, missile attack and surveillance. FM 44-100

  6. TYPES OF AIR DEFENSE MISSIONS • ADA of a critical asset. • Route defense - Prepositioned along a route to provide coverage for all assets moving along the route. • Convoy defense - Positioned throughout the convoy. • ADA of a maneuver unit - Requires detailed coordination.

  7. AIR DEFENSE MEASURES Active Air Defense: Fighting back is active air defense * Direct action taken to destroy enemy aerial platforms or reduce their effectiveness. * Commander’s Responsibility * Organic Weapons - Destroy the threat - Force the threat away from friendly positions - Force threat to fly higher, ADA can destroy - Spoil hostile pilot’s aim as they engage friendly forces * Right of Self Defense

  8. AIR DEFENSE MEASURES Passive Air Defense: - All measures other than active defense to minimize the effect of hostile air action. - Includes the use of camouflage and concealment. - Damage Limiting - Dispersion - Protective Construction - Cover - Convoy Self-Defense Measures

  9. AIR DEFENSE EQUIPMENT • Stingers • Avenger Sling to Cue • Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle • Bradley Linebacker • FAADC3I • Sentinel • Patriots

  10. AD OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES • MANEUVER STAFF COORDINATION • DEVELOP AIR DEFENSE PLAN • PASSIVE AND ACTIVE AD EXPERTISE • COORDINATE WITH ADJACENT ADA UNITS • AIRSPACE MANAGEMENT • AIR EARLY WARNING • EXTERNAL RADAR ASSETS BATTERY COMMANDER PLATOON LEADER

  11. COMMANDERS GUIDANCE FOR AIR DEFENSE BLUF: What do you want ADA to do and where are you willing to accept risk. Identify specific ADA priorities by critical asset or phase (A thorough IPB will identify these requirements) Critical Assets: C2, ARTY, CSS, Main Effort, Choke Points, Aviation, FAARP, etc. Key Events by Phase: Main Avenue of Approach, Security Zone, LZs, DZs, MSRs, Bridges, ADA Ambush etc. * Most important- If there is no air threat to an asset then there is no need for ADA. Prioritize scarce ADA assets where they best support the maneuver plan.

  12. AIR DEFENSE WARNING/ WEAPON CONTROL STATUS • Directed ADW from UEy or higher: • Red - Attack is imminent or in progress. • Yellow - Attack is probable. • White - Attack is not likely. • Weapon control status: • Free - Fire at aircraft NOT positively identified as friendly. • Tight - Fire only at aircraft positively identified as hostile. • Hold - Fire only in self-defense or in response to formal order. Probability of enemy air attack Weapons response to air attack

  13. LOCAL AIR DEFENSE WARNINGS * Broadcast over commo nets of local Bde or below. • Changes to the ADW in a Local Area: • Dynamite - Aerial targets are inbound, attack in progress. • Lookout- Aerial targets may be in the area of interest but are not threatening. • Snowman - No threatening aerial targets are in the area.

  14. EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES • BALANCED FIRES • WEIGHTED COVERAGE • EARLY ENGAGEMENT • DEFENSE IN DEPTH • MUTUAL SUPPORT • OVERLAPPING FIRES

  15. Positioning Weapons to Deliver an equal volume of fire in all directions. Balanced BALANCE FIRES

  16. TERRAIN MASK FOR POP UP & SHOOT ENGAGEMENT RANGE MUST EXCEED MIN. ORDANANCE RELEASE LINE EARLY ENGAGEMENT CAPABLE OF ENGAGING AIRCRAFT PRIOR TO MINIMUM ORDANCE RELEASE DISTANCE X BSA 5 KM AT-6 WIRE GUIDED/ ANTI-TANK MISSILE RANGE : 5 KM

  17. X DEFENSE IN DEPTH • Threat A/C encounter an increasing volume of fire as they approach a specific asset

  18. OVERLAPPING FIRES WEAPONS ENVELOPES OVERLAP & NO GAPS EXIST

  19. MUTUAL SUPPORT Team 1 Masking Terrain Team 2

  20. SUMMARY 1) Mission. 2) Weapon systems. 3) Air space C2/WCS and ADW. 4) Employment guidelines. Questions ???
