Journal – Tuesday, October 1, 2013 • Standards: • 2a. Students know atoms combine to form molecules by sharing electrons or ionic bonds by exchanging electrons. • Independent Practice: • Types of Chemical Bonds Worksheet • Chemical Bonding Love Poem: Due Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 1pm. • Identify each of the following as Ionic or Covalent. • H2O • CO2 • NaCl • MgF2 • CH2COOH • Fe(OH)2 • Explain how you know.
Today’s Agenda: • Pop Quiz!! • Finish Covalent Bonding Notes (if applicable). • Venn Diagram: Ionic vs. Covalent Compounds – 15 minutes • Polyatomic Ions List • Chemical Bonding Love Poem Overview
Venn Diagram – 15 minutes • Ionic Bonding vs. Covalent Bonding • In Middle: At least two complete sentences. • Each circle: At least three complete sentences.
Polyatomic Ions • You will get a list of common ions. • Highlight, underline or star all Polyatomic Cations and Polyatomic Anions that are bolded. • You WILL be tested on these. The expectation is that you know the name, formula, and specific charge for each of these polyatomic ions.
Chemical Bonding Love Poem • Chemical Bonds • 2. Biological, chemical, and physical properties of matter result from the ability of atoms to form bonds from electrostatic forces between electrons and protons and between atoms and molecules. As a basis for understanding this concept: • a. Students know atoms combine to form molecules by sharing electrons to form covalent or metallic bonds or by sharing electrons to form ionic bonds. • e. Students know how to draw Lewis dot structures.
The Task • Write a love poem telling the story of the bonding of two elements. You may choose any format for your poem: • Your poem must have a title and be creatively submitted. • Make sure you specifically describe the type of bond (ionic or covalent) and provide chemistry details describing the bonding experience. This story must feature AT LEAST two different elements. Include group number, name of the element, number of valence electrons, etc. The bonding must be plausible. • In addition, you must draw four Lewis dot structures on your creatively presented poem.
