Topic for Today Drinking alcohol … Why? Why Not? How Much?
This Briefing is intended to be a preemptive strike. Address the issue BEFORE it becomes a problem.
Figure out what can hurt you … do something about it! • A lot of you aren’t old enough to drink yet • But, you will be soon enough. • If you have given the subject careful thought well in advance, • Your chances for disaster will be reduced significantly.
The Six P’s: Prior Planning Prevents Profoundly Poor Performance
If consumed in moderation there is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol. MODERATION is the key.
Alcohol, like most things in life … Is just fine when consumed in moderation. But, when it’s consumed in excess, it can be hazardous (even deadly).
If you are: a male over 40 years old a female over 50 years old there are some scientifically proven benefits to moderate regular consumption of alcohol.
Health benefits of moderateregular alcohol use For males over 40 and females over 50. Reduce your risk of developing and dying from heart disease raises HDL (good) cholesterol cuts the risk of death from heart disease by about 25 %. Reduce your risk of ischemic stroke … when the arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow Reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes
As the chart above shows, drinking alcohol harms far more people than it helps. But … this is ALL drinking, not moderate drinking. “Deaths prevented” are a result of moderate drinking.
Alcohol use can be a slippery slope … It's safest to avoid alcohol entirely — the possible benefits don't outweigh the risks. BUT … if consumed responsibly (in moderation) The risks are relatively low.
If you're a middle-aged (under 40) or younger adult (that would be you, cadets) … Evidence shows that even moderate alcohol use may cause more harm than good.
So … I keep referring to “moderate consumption” What is moderate consumption?
Guidelines for moderate alcohol use For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages for men older than age 65 up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger. Examples of one drink include: Beer: 12 fluid ounces Wine: 5 fluid ounces Distilled spirits (80 proof): 1.5 fluid ounces
Male limit = 2 drinks a day Female limit = 1 drink a day So, what’s up with that? In general, men are able to handle alcohol consumption better than women. Being larger in build, men have more blood volume and less body fat than women. In addition, men have a higher concentration of dehydrogenase – an enzyme that breaks alcohol down. As a result, women respond faster and with more intensity after a round of drinks.
OK … when I turn 21, if I choose to consume alcohol, even though there is no real benefit at that age, one or two drinks a day probably isn’t going to hurt me … right? So what happens if I drink more than that? What are the risks?

OK Contestants… we are out of time … that’s the end of Jeopardy. Congratulations … you all did exceedingly well. You are all headed to “Final Jeopardy” (at age 21) where you will have the opportunity to “risk it all”.
Jeopardy Summary: The ONLY benefits of alcohol consumption come from regular moderate drinking (1 or 2 drinks) in adults over 40. All of the risks come from excessive consumption (more than 1 or 2 drinks).
Hard to Believe … But True Whiskey that is only 8 years old will whip a grown man every time.
Learn from other’s mistakes … • You aren’t going to live long enough to make them all yourself • Especially if excessive alcohol consumption is involved.
Listen to the voice of experience (that would be me). I have been dinking for almost 50 years. I can’t think of a single positive thing that drinking alcohol (before I turned 40) did for me. I can, however, think of several negative things that it did for me. If could go back and do it over again, I would do it differently. I wouldn’t drink until I was 40, when there are some quantifiable health benefits associated with moderate alcohol consumption.
Don’t let peer pressure influence your decision. Be “data driven” … if there is no benefit, only potential significant risks, why do it? Moderate alcohol consumption won’t help you be: a better driver a better pilot a better friend a better student a better employee a better boss a better spouse a better parent Trust me …
The legal drinking age in Texas is 21. So … you have a few years to think about it. Just make sure you think about it so you will have your decision made well in advance. If you decide to not drink at all, you won’t be missing anything that is GOOD. If you do decide to start drinking as soon as you are legal, make darned sure that you limit your consumption to 1 or 2 a drinks a day (absolute maximum).
This is a VERY important decision. It WILL have DRAMATIC and Long Lasting effects … Not only on your health and safety But on everything in your life.
Give it some serious thought! Ask for advice from adults you trust. Have your decision made well before your 21st birthday.
Insider Tip for the Old Folks! A six pack is NOT like a frozen TV dinner … You are not expected to consume the whole thing. You should have leftovers.
Males … 2 drinks Females … 1 drink Old Folks … 1 drink NO EXCEPTIONS!
Take - away message: It’s not the alcohol … It’show much of it you drink.
