Who? The enemy alliance included: • Germany • Japan • Italy
Where? • The invasion took place on the beaches of Normandy in France.
When? • The original plan for the attack on Germany at Normandy was in May 1944, however the landing craft assembly took longer than expected and the attack had to be postponed. • The attack was delayed from the 5th of June to the 6th of June due to weather. • On June 6th, 1944, Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch on the beaches of Normandy, France to fight Nazi Germany.
What? • D Day was the invasion of Nazi Germany by 160,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy • The Allies had misled Germany to believe that the main invasion target was Pas-de-Calais by using fake equipment; a phantom army, double agents, and fraudulent radio transmissions. • 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft were involved in the D-Day invasion. • 9,000 Allied casualties
Canada’s Role • 14 000 Canadian soldiers were planned to land on the beaches. • 10 000 sailors and many ships were supplied to the effort by the Royal Canadian Navy. Lancaster bombers and Spitfire fighters from the Royal Canadian Air Force supported the invasion. • Canada had the major role of taking one of the five designated beaches where Allied forces landed. • Canada was responsible for Juno Beach.
Why? • Germany had invaded France • The Defeat of the U Boats (submarines of the Nazis) in the Battle of Atlantic • The Royal Air Force gained control of the skies at the end of the Battle of Britain
