PL P5/P6 Math Programme • Math Olympiad Training • A* Booklets • Noteworthy Questions • Challenge Problem Sets • Process Skills Booklets • www.problemsums.com
Use of Calculators at P5 & P6 • AIMS • Widen the repertoire of teaching and learning approaches to include investigations and problems in authentic situations
Use of Calculators at P5 & P6 • AIMS • Achieve a better balance between the emphasis on computational skills and problem solving skills
Use of Calculators at P5 & P6 • AIMS • Help students to develop greater confidence in doing mathematics, particularly those with difficulty learning the subject
Students’ basic computational skills may be weakened • Concepts must be taught well first before the use of calculators • Remind pupils that basic computational skills are still important as it is required in Paper 1 Concerns Good Practices
Concerns Good Practices • Pupils are not able to decide when to use the calculator • Make use of the calculator symbol as a guide
Concerns Good Practices • Pupils tend to leave out the working steps leading to their final answers • Cultivate the habit of writing working steps in daily work as method marks are awarded for correct steps shown
Assessment in PL 100% 30% 100% 70%
PSLE MATHEMATICS FORMAT since 2010 • Note : • Both papers will be scheduled on the same day with a break between the two papers. • Paper 1 comprises two booklets. The use of calculators is NOT allowed. • Paper 2 comprises one booklet. The use of calculators is allowed.
Estimated Time for doing Paper 1 (Use of Calculator is NOT allowed) Multiple Choice (Booklet A) 1-mark questions: 10 questions x 1 min = 10 min 2-mark questions: 5 questions x 2 min = 10 min Short Answer (Booklet B) 1-mark questions: 10 questions x 1 min = 10 min 2-mark questions: 5 questions x 2 min = 10 min Checking : 10 min Total time = 50 min 15

Getting Prepared • Day of PPs/SAs/PSLE • Have a good breakfast • Avoid solving Mathematics questions • Enjoy the paper – take it as a challenge
Getting Prepared • Day of PPs/SAs/PSLE • Circle questions that she cannot solve in any examinations and move on to the next question • Complete the rest of the paper before returning to the question • Have CONFIDENCE in themselves!
