Battle of GonzalesOctober 2, 1835 • Differences between Texas and Mexico progressed from the talking stage to the shooting stage • The first battle of the Texas Revolutionwas The Battle of Gonzales.
Mexico sent a force of 100 soldiers, led by Lieutenant Francisco Casteneda, to take back a cannon that had been given to the residents of Gonzales for defense against Indians. • The Texans refused to give the cannon up. • In response, about 160 settlers rallied in Gonzales, led by Colonel J.H. Moore, and prepared to use the cannon against the Mexican soldiers
Near the Cannon they flew a banner inscribed with the words “COME AND TAKE IT” to show their defiance.
On October 2nd, Moore’s men fired the cannon at the Mexican Soldiers. Casteneda ordered his troops to retreat to San Antonio. • The battle showed that the Texans were becoming more defiant toward the Mexican government and more willing to use military force if necessary.
