Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology- is any device that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities (Tech,1998).
Law in Regard to Assistive Technology • Any child with an IEP must be considered for assistive technology. • Child must have access to assistive technology to receive a fair appropriate education. • It is the school system responsibility to provide assistive technolgy for the child under 504 or IDEA
Disabilities &Assistive Technology Hearing Impaired Seeing Impaired • Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) • A Transcription machine to record spoken text. • All speech is recorded • A written record of everything said in the classroom. • Text is displayed on a computer monitor or projected screen. • Visual Aids are used. • Books on tapes • Large print books • Magnifier • Eyeglasses
Disabilities & Assistive Technology Learning Disability Physically Disabled • Computer-Based Instruction • Speech-recognition programs • Talking calculators • Graphic organizers and outlines • Walkers • Manual or powered wheelchairs • Wedges and straps. • Adapted pencil grips • Screen readers
