Biomedical factors • High blood pressure • High blood sugar levels • Obesity • High cholesterol levels
Biomedical factors lead to High blood pressure – stroke /Heart disease High blood glucose levels - Diabetes type 2 Overweight and Obesity – heart disease – strokes, heart attack High cholesterol levels – strokes and heart attacks.
Attitudes, lack of knowledge and beliefs lead to: • Heart disease • Hypertension • Diabetes • Skin cancer • Anaemia • Oesteoporosis For example attitudes towards smoking and drinking ,physical exercise and diet lead to heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. The belief that a bronze tan is healthy leads to skin cancer A lack of knowledge about iron in the diet leads to anaemia A lack of knowledge about calcium in the diet leads to oesteoporosis Parental attitudes about letting their children drink soft drinks leads to dental caries
Genetics influence: • Osteoporosis – women’s oestrogen levels drop during menopause – causes calcium uptake to be reduced • Heart disease - high cholesterol levels can be genetic • Hypertension - men have higher levels of blood pressure due to testosterone • Breast cancer – women have higher rates due to hormone levels
Environment influences: • Skin cancer – sun • Type 2 diabetes – fast food outlets • Heart disease – lack of areas for physical exercise • Hypertension – cars – less walking or lack of areas to exercise • Dental caries – no fluoride in the water • Obesity – lack of areas to exercise safely will reduce people’s opportunities to reduce weight
Lifestyle leads to: • Breast cancer and colorectal cancer – diet high in saturated fats due to high amounts of fast food increase risk and high amounts of alcohol also increase the risk • Hypertension, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis- lack of physical activity • Hypertension, heart disease – high stress levels, take away foods • Skin cancer – outdoors lifestyle
