Transitive Verbs. Are action verbs that have a direct object. The action is transported to the direct object . Intransitive Verbs. Are verbs that do not have a direct object. This includes some action verbs and all linking verbs. Direct Objects.

  1. Transitive Verbs • Are action verbs that have a direct object. • The action is transported to the direct object. Intransitive Verbs • Are verbs that do not have a direct object. • This includes some action verbs and all linking verbs.

  2. Direct Objects

  3. In order for a sentence to have a direct object, the sentence must contain an action verb. • An action verb is a verb that you can do. The boy dropped the ball. The dog lost his bone.

  4. To find the direct object you follow these steps. 1. You put all prepositional phrases in parenthesis. 2. Find the simple predicate/action verb. 3. Find the simple subject. 4. Ask yourself, “(verb) what?”

  5. Lets try one together On Monday I crossed the street to my neighbor’s house.

  6. Prep. Phrases Step One On Monday I crossed the street to my neighbors house. (On Monday) I crossed the street (to my neighbor’s house.)

  7. Action Verb? Step Two (On Monday) I crossed the street (to my neighbor’s house.) (On Monday) I crossed the street (to my neighbor’s house.)

  8. Step Three Simple Subject? (On Monday) I crossed the street (to my neighbors house.) (On Monday) Icrossed the street (to my neighbors house.)

  9. Step Four Verb What? (On Monday) Icrossed the street (to my neighbors house.) (On Monday) Icrossed the street (to my neighbors house.)

  10. Let’s try some on your own. • Uncle Tim sent a letter to my home. • The tiny kitten climbed the tree. • The hungry boy smelled the lasagna. • My bare skin felt the cold wind.
