How do we get the Oil? • Drilling: • Digs into earth to get the oil. • The OIL that is used to run the machine creates air pollution. • Extraction: • Air pollution can be caused by the oil escaping during extraction. • Off shore drilling: • Occurs 200+ miles off coastline • FRAC-ing (alternative to drilling): • Used in PA and NY where companies can drill into underground rock layers where the oil or gas is trapped.
Environmental Consequences • Oil Spills: water/ocean pollution • Air pollution: carbon dioxide/sulfur • Mining: dirt pollution • Drilling: dirt pollution • Transporting: (oil spills) water/ ocean pollution • Burning: air pollution • Factoring: air/ water/ dirt pollution
The cultural consequences of extracting Oil! • If we were not to extract the oil, we wouldn’t have medicine, no means of transportation and no plastic! • No roads, glue, boats, tires, plastic bags • WAR! • Petro-dictators OIL US IRAQ
What are Industries doing to help? • Industries, such as BP, are trying to clean up the oil spill by funding volunteers to clean up the oceans and beaches that have been affected. • Government is trying to put a limit on how much oil can be shipped at once. • More companies are constructing more eco-friendly buildings.
What should be done? • Conserve • Hybrids • Recycle plastic • Biodiesel • Solar Energy • Hyper miler
