Chronology: Putting first things first… • #1 Creation of the League of Nations * • happened after WW I • 1920 – was the result of the Paris Peace Conference • Idea of Pres. Woodrow Wilson • ironically, Congress didn’t approve so the U.S. did not join • #2 Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany under the Weimar Constitution • January 30th, 1933 • #3 Japan leaves the League of Nations • February 24th, 1933 • Largely a result of heavy criticism of “The Manchurian Incident” from 1931 and the creation of Manzhouguo • #4 Italy invades Ethiopia (1935) • 1935 • Il Duce makes his move • League of Nations: voted sanctions against Italy • LN had no power to enforce sanctions
Hitler makes his move! • #5 Germany sends troops into the Rhineland • 1936 • Forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles • Hitler was watching the LN’s response to Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia • Saw the ineffectiveness of the League as a “green light” to aggresssion • #6 Germany invades Austria • 1938: Marked the “Anschluss” • #7 Germany invades Poland • 1939 • Beginning of WW II as Britain & France realize the failure of appeasement and declare war on Germany!
#8 Japan attacks Pearl Harbor • December 7, 1941 • “A day that will live in infamy.” -FDR • #9 U.S. enters the war! • December 8, 1941 – FDR addresses Congress! • #10 D-Day • June 6, 1944 - the invasion of France. • Key turning point for Allies • #11 V-E Day • May 8, 1945 • The day after Germany surrendered
#12 V-J Day August 14, 1945: Japan surrendered unconditionally to the Allies With this goal achieved, WW II ended.
#13 Creation of the UN: • In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States, in August-October 1944. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 member states.The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and a majority of other signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year.
