Membranes Tissue Lecture 4
Structure • Flat sheets of pliable tissue that cover or line a part of the body
Types of membranes • Epithelial membranes • Consist of an epithelial layer and an underlying connective tissue layer • Types include • Mucous membranes • Line cavities that open to the environment • Epithelial layer provides a barrier to pathogens and a trapping surface for particles • The connective tissue layer is called the lamina propria
Serous membranes • Line a body cavity and covers organs that lie within that cavity • Pleura, pericardium, and peritonium • Consist of parietal and visceral portions • Epithelial layer secretes a lubricating serous fluid that reduces friction between organs and the walls of the cavities • Synovial membranes • Line joint cavities, bursae, and tendon sheaths and contain only connective tissue • They also secrete a lubricating synovial fluid • Cutaneous membrane (skin)
