6 b) What do you think are the key things that should be done to improve the current National Curriculum?
7 a) What are the key ways in which the National Curriculum can be slimmed down?
7 b) Do you think that the proportion or amount of lesson time should be specified in any way in the National Curriculum; eg for particular subjects and/or within particular key stages?
6. 6 Developing the future vision
Technology colleges prepare students for life in the future. Technology plays a significant role in driving up standards within the school. We successfully develop scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians of the future. We are centres of excellence, incorporating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). We should use technologies throughout the school and within our local community to motivate and inspire learning for all.
A technological approach to learning underpins the whole curriculum, encouraging students to become enterprising and creative problem solvers who take risks with their learning, working independently and with others. We encourage the development of practical and technological skills along with the scientific understanding required to design and make products and systems that make the world a better place for everyone.
7. 7 Developing the future vision
We have innovation at the heart of the curriculum which makes a distinctive contribution to whole school achievement and creates learning opportunities for all. We help to improve standards and learning in design and technology, science and mathematics; and in other subjects through the use of technology. We develop learning and teaching approaches and opportunities that motivate and inspire learners. We lead in developing and delivering a forward thinking curriculum.
We promote participation and achievement in STEM including in our schools, our partner schools and the wider community.
? Contribution to rebalancing of the economy?
Key question
Is our vision still appropriate?
8. Development of an SSAT quality mark Headteachers’ views are sought on a the development of a quality mark that could be used to validate successful and impactful specialism practice.
This might enable schools to be recognised as ‘centres of excellence’ in specialism. It would be time limited, renewable periodically.
It is proposed that a tool will be developed to support schools’ self –review: based on processes and evidence already in place, demonstrating impact of specialist areas and subjects on school improvement, achievement, attainment, work with partner schools and the wider community.
The process might involve school self- review supported and validated by an SSAT consultant. 8
9. Headteachers’ views are sought about: The nature of a quality mark for specialism: is this something that schools would pursue?
What generic aspects of specialism might be part of the evidence that a school presents?
What specific aspects of practice for their specialism should be recognised?
Should there be levels of achievement ? For example Arts mark can be achieved at bronze, silver and gold levels
How long should the quality mark apply for?
Are there examples of other quality marks or accreditation that have been helpful to schools or that should inform development of this quality mark?
