Muscles of Mastication • Masseter- raises the jaw and clenches the teeth; functions to chew food. extends from the zygomatic arch to the mandible.
Muscles of Mastication • Temporalis- fan shaped muscle on the side of the skull above & in front of the ear; helps raise the jaw & passes downward beneath the zygomatic arch to the mandible
Muscles of Mastication • Medial Pterygoid- Extends down from the sphenoid, palatine & maxillary bones to the ramus; raises the jaw & it moves from side to side
Muscles of Mastication • Lateral Pterygoid- Extends down from the mandibularcondyle to the sphenoid bone; lowers the mouth & move the mandible from the side to side
Muscles of Mastication • Sternocleidomastoid- long muscle on the neck; extends from the thorax to the skull base behind the ear • when it contracts on one side; the face turns the opposite way • when both contract, the head is brought to the chest
