Daily Agenda Ms. DeSalvo November 8, 2013
Bell Ringer November 8, 2013Activity: Inertia • What is Inertia? • Provide one example of inertia. (hint: think of the stations) • Which has more inertia: • Semi Truck • bicycle
CPS (Period 6,8)November 8, 2013 Period 6: 10:31 - 11:03Period 8: 11:47 - 12:20 Last Class (See me for missed work) • Measuring Force • Intro to Spring Scales • Spring scale demos • Newton’s 3rd Law • Homework: Newton’s 3rd Law. Due today 11/8/13. Today • Mass vs. Weight • Notes • Derive formula
Directions • Take out a sheet of paper, separate from where you will be taking your general notes. • Put your Name, Date & Period at the top. • As we go through the notes, you will be asked to respond to a series of discussion questions. • This is your exit slip to leave class today. You will turn this in for a grade.
Mass Mass ≠ Weight • MASS is a measure of the amount of matter in an object • Mass will not change as you move from place to place • Mass is the measure of the inertia of an object • The more mass an object has, the harder it is to move it (or stop it)
Response 1 • In your own words, write a one sentence summary that explains mass.
Weight WEIGHT is a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object (the force with which Earth’s gravity pulls on a quantity of matter) • Weight changes due to gravity • The force varies from place to place • Ex: Weight of an object will be different on Earth than on the moon • You can be weight-less in space...but you’re not mass-less!
Response 2 • In your own words, write a one sentence summary that explains the difference between mass and weight as you change from place to place.
Types and Units • Mass is a PROPERTY • Measured in kilograms (kg) • Weight is a FORCE • Measured in newtons (N) A force, in simple terms, is either a push or a pull
Response 3 • In your own words, write a one sentence summary that explains the units of measure used for Mass and Force.
(Pushing a Car) • Would pushing a car be any easier on the moon? • No! • The car has the same mass, even if the weight is lighter
Force N Kg 9.8 m/s2
Response 4 • In your own words, write a one sentence summary that states the correct formula you would use to calculate Force.
BIO Bell Ringer 11/8/13Activity: Energy sources. • Where does energy come from (the kind of energy that organisms use)? • How does energy move around the ecosystem?
Food Web • A complex relationship of interrelated food chains in an ecological community. Also called a food cycle.
Biology (Period 2,3,4)November 8, 2013 Period 2: 7:59 - 8:31Period 3: 8:37 - 9:09Period 4: 9:15 - 9:47 Last Class (See me for missed work) • What is Energy • Energy Demos • Individual demo recordings. Today • Energy at the Macro-level • Vital Community Activity • WB & Discuss VCA
