Coordination of Safety-Critical Mobile Real-Time Embedded Systems Aline Senart, Mélanie Bouroche, Barbara Hughes and Vinny Cahill Distributed Systems Group Trinity College Dublin Ireland CRTES, April 4th, 2006
Motivations Mobile devices + wireless capabilities => Mobile safety-critical applications Key requirement: Real-time coordination
Impediments 1/2 • Proactive routing useful? Partition anticipation? Mobility prediction? How to limit excessive resource reservation? • Can we provide temporal guarantees by imposing some constraints? Is it possible to inform the application about a decrease of latency or a network partition? How can we provide such a feedback in real-time? • Timely communication is hard to provide Event producer Interested consumer P Other nodes X Adequate real-time (ad hoc) wireless communication models
Impediments 2/2 • Application-wide safety constraints are difficult to guarantee for interacting embedded systems Appropriate real-time coordination models • Is it possible to automate the translation of application-specific constraints into constraints on individual embedded systems? • How to keep distributed views and actions timely and consistent? • How to resynchronise outdated views in a bounded interval of time?
Conclusion • Need for real-time coordination of safety-critical mobile embedded systems • Adequate real-time wireless communication and appropriate coordination models required • Our current research • Designing and implementing the Space-Elastic Model that returns to application a varying geographical area in which real-time communication is guaranteed • Currently investigating a coordination model able to ensure system-wide safety constraints
