  3. New York / New Jersey • New York • Founded By Dutch • Called It New Amsterdam – lots of fur trade • The English Renamed it NY in 1664 • New Jersey • Had diverse population of Dutch, Swedes, Finns & Scots • English Took Control in 1664

  4. Pennsylvania • Founded by William Penn – A Quaker • Quakers supported non-violence & Religious tolerance. • Philadelphia means “City of Brotherly Love.”

  5. Economy • Farming • Wheat • Barley • Oats • Labor – Mostly Indentured Servants • Trade with England & West Indies (Cuba) was important.
